Getting out there again: View from a kayak

Camera phone image of Lake Texoma showing the clarity of the water This will probably be my next painting. I am working on getting back to the simplicity and beauty of water and how light reacts on its surface and even more important through its depths. It's been a long time since we have kayaked and today we broke a streak. Unfortunately, didn't break the streak of being skunked. Smallmouth bass are sitting on the bottom laughing at the hapless fishermen as we speak. But this post is not about fishing or painting-it's about being out there. It was truly an amazing day. The sky was brilliant blue, the redbuds and bradford pear competing to be noticed. We didn't even rush to get the kayaks out, there was plenty of time to just enjoy being there. We threw crank baits and tubes, slabs and even some topwater and the fish wouldn't budge. In fact we didn't mark many fish on the fish finder. We paddled, we paddled and paddled some more and even though the 54°...

My Secret Garden: A Place to Escape

North of Farmersville Texas the old quaint neighborhoods fade into long farm roads. Miles of empty space, small farms and cattle; it's a wonderful place to disappear. I heard about Parkhill Prairie when I took a prairie tour at the Lavon Raptor Center on their first Saturday open house. The first few times I visited, it was cool and windy and beautifully quiet. Hawks soared in a deep blue sky and crows called from distant perches against a backdrop of golden grasses that swayed adding to a symphony of natural sounds. I would sit on the stone wall and watch silently the distant hills and golden prairies, I had found my peaceful oasis. Today was the first time I had walked through the green grasses and gardens of wildflowers, a perfect hot day, late spring. No cars, no people, just an explorer in my secret garden. The crows have been replaced with the buzz of red-winged blackbirds and rich melodic notes of Dickcissel. The wind rushed through the willows a...

A seasoned kayaker is bested

I would usually be shooting this from the kayak but in this case, if I was brave or stupid enough to have tried, it would have probably wound up on the bottom of the ocean, so an image of the surf will have to suffice. Ok, I’ve been on many bodies of water, some rougher than others. I have been in swells on Lake Texoma that made us all question our judgement but I have never met quite an adversary as I did on vacation: the surf is a pretty merciless opponent. I didn’t have that much apprehension on the first excursion. It was sunset, the waves were less than optimal and we were packed like. Seemed like it was going to be just fine, first lesson don’t try to climb a kayak in deep water, even though the waves at their worst closer to shore it’s still easier to climb on than trying in deeper water. I did several 360 rolls before learning this very important aspect of surf kayaking. A wonderful time on the sunset surf, it was a bit rough and a bit windy but the lighting, the s...
